Bursary 2010-11 - Tim Rowan

Hastings Exhibition July 2011, by Matt DawWorking with a group of 10 mental health service users, in the premises of the Mind Activ8 club in Hastings (www.activ8network.org), Tim Rowan used his bursary to pay for the costs of running a course of photographic workshops from March - May 2011.

Weekly 4 hour sessions ran for 12 weeks, culminating in an exhibition of selected photographs from 1st - 9th July 2011 at the Activ8 Gallery (5-6 Trinity Street, Hastings, East Sussex).

The sessions were led by Tim, and supported by Activ8 staff, and participants were also given the opportunity to receive one-to-one Photoshop training from an Activ8 staff member outside the workshops in order to learn how to edit and improve their photos.

Tim has also managed the conversion of basement space at Activ8 into a photographic studio, providing the foundations of long-term photography activities there. The studio will also provide the opportunity for participants to learn practical studio skills, and to be able to offer cost price sessions for clients who wish to have portraits taken for themselves, families and friends.

“People gain confidence and self-esteem when they learn a skill.  I have my own experience and skills to offer and whilst supporting others the process of managing and organising a group will help me build on my current experience and professional photographic practice. I believe that negative body issues are also a concern in this day and age. really it is a chance for people with mental health issues to receive positivity on both sides of the camera.” Tim Rowan 2011
