Project BackgroundDisability Equality training

By running a series of 10 photographic workshops in each of the 5 regions in which the YP-in operates - South East, South West, London, West Midlands and Yorkshire - PhotoVoice has enabled nearly 50 participants to document and explore their identities as disabled young people through photography, focusing on issues around access and inclusion. The workshops will culminate in regional exhibitions, a national exhibition in London and a publication aimed at policy makers, leisure providers and the public.

PhotoVoice facilitators participate in Disability

Equality Training prior to the first workshops

Working with young people with a variety of different requirments for inclusion, including those with physical impairments, learning difficulties, visual impairments and epilepsy, the workshops run by PhotoVoice facilitators have introduced the young people to to the concept of conveying a personal message through their images. In some cases with the help of adaptive camera equipment, the young people have explored various themes, experiences and locations using digital cameras with the ultimate aim of presenting an exhibiiton and publication that cover important and often overlooked issues around growing up as a disabled young person in Britain.

The Young People’s Inclusion Network (YP-in), a project initiated and funded by the charity Kids, is a private network for disabled young people, through which members can create strong social bonds and share their thoughts and experiences. There are YP-in groups meeting regularly in London, Bristol, Fareham, Hull and Birmingham, and a secure website (www.yp-in.net) through which members can interact online.
