How We See It

An inspiring and thought provoking selection of images, videos and music has been created in a series of photography and digital media workshops in order to challenge stereotypes of inner city youth.

The works are the result of collaboration between Fairbridge, PhotoVoice and the Tate Modern Young People’s Programme, who provided the young people with the freedom and skills to capture a snapshot of their lives in a project.

The works, which will be launched on howweseeit.org on 26th of November, show a surprising array of subjects, from religion, family and the changing Hackney landscape to young people’s concerns about violence and postcode issues on the streets where they live.

Andrew Purvis, Chief Executive of Fairbridge said "At Fairbridge we work with around 4000 young people a year and we know that the media often portrays them in a bad light. This negative picture of the UK's young people is not only wrong, but also damaging. The collaboration with PhotoVoice has allowed this group to challenge those misconceptions, and express how they see their world. I hope everyone who sees their images will be as inspired as I am by what they've achieved."

My City, My World, Liverpool

From July 2009 PhotoVoice has been working in partnership with the Liverpool City Council (LCC) to deliver photographic workshops with young people across Liverpool. Working with young people living in three of the Children’s Homes in Liverpool, as well as young people with learning difficulties and physical disabilities across the city, more than thirty participants have produced excellent photographs that convey their unique perspectives on life and on the city they live in. A travelling component of the exhibition will tour schools and public spaces in January. If you would be interested in hosting this exhibition at your premises or event please contact Matt Daw: matt@photovoice.org

The work will also be presented in a high quality photo book, which will be available at the exhibition and to order online from this website from 14th December.

Moving Lives 2009

PhotoVoice’s work with refugees continued in a new partnership with the British Refugee Council SMILE Project. From August until October 2009,  ‘Moving Lives 2009’, led by Liz Orton, worked with 12 unaccompanied refugee children who had all been in the UK less than a year. Les Monaghan, Rashmi Munikempanna, Camila Cavalcante Pereira and Ben Thomas worked alongside Liz to explore reflective practice in facilitation and how we can develop our facilitator training methodology.  Thanks to Karen Browne for support throughout the project.

_ NEW PROJECTS

World Vision Partnership

PhotoVoice has been working in partnership with World Vision to deliver photography workshops with young people living with HIV in St Petersburg Russia, and with young people in Roma communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The twenty young people taking part have been producing photographs that convey their thoughts, feelings and experience of HIV/AIDS, providing often overlooked perspectives on the reality of the issues in their societies.

The photographs will be exhibited publicly in St Petersburg and Sarajevo in December 2009, to coincide with World AIDS Day on 1st December. The work from both countries will then feed into a campaign around the International AIDS Conference in Vienna in July 2010, where it will be shown in public spaces to bring the real voices of those involved in the issues being discussed to the attention of the public and policy makers.

Having Our Say

at risk of or affected by sexual exploitation.

Nick Danziger - Photographer, Filmmaker, Author

His images have since appeared in newspapers and magazines worldwide, toured museums and galleries internationally, and are held in numerous museum collections including the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Nick has won several prestigious awards, including an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society, and he is holder of the Royal Geographical Society’s Ness Award in recognition of raising public understanding of contemporary social, political and environmental issues through documentary films and photography.
