Six Yards to Democracy: A Bird's Eye View Film Festival Special Screening During election time in one of the poorest areas of the North Indian city of Lucknow, a politician distributed free saris, hoping to secure votes. Tragedy ensued when a stampede caused the deaths of 22 women. This beautifully shot documentary takes the incident as a starting point to consider the daily humiliations forced upon these women and their families. As boomtown dynamics push them further into the margins of society, we observe them as they struggle to keep their homes, hopes and dignity intact while petitioning an apathetic state for their dues. Moving Lives: Photography by young unaccompanied refugees in London PhotoVoice continues to work with young and newly arrived refugees, training them in photography skills. Exploring themes such as identity, PhotoVoice gives them a means to tell their stories and represent themselves as they want to be seen and heard by others. As well as training over 35 young refugees since October as part of its Moving Lives project, PhotoVoice has run a series of workshops in conjunction with The Children’s Society’s ‘Refugees Aloud’ programme – a three year initiative which helps young refugees speak up and put across their own messages in the media. Some of the young refugees have entered self-portrait images to the National Self-Portrait UK competition. In 2004, Florian, a PhotoVoice participant, was one of the UK’s 12 national finalists and his self-portrait was exhibited at The National Portrait Gallery. |
