Israeli soldiers and Egyptian prisoners of war, under an Egyptian artillery barrage of shells on the "Hatzer", a bridgehead where the Israeli forces were deploying to cross to the west side of the Suez Canal. 1973.
Internationally acclaimed author, journalist and broadcaster Charles Glass will be joined by Magnum correspondent Micha Bar-Am and two members of Parents Circle - Families Forum (PCFF), a network of over 400 Israeli and Palestinian bereaved families dedicated to pursuing peace and dialogue as an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Micha Bar-Am has been a Magnum Correspondent since 1968 and has spent many years photographing the Arab-Israeli conflict from his home in Israel. Through a presentation of his images, he will explore the personal dilemmas of a photographer as witness-observer who covers his own backyard.
Bar-Am will be joined by Jammal Khudiri and Avraham Shomroni of the PCFF who will talk of their own personal experiences which have led them to join the PCFF in pursuit of peace and reconciliation. Charles Glass will chair questions from the audience.
Jammal Khudiri is the Principal of an elementary school near Nablus. As a young child, he left for Jordan in 1967. The family travelled in a car that was bombed by air force. His young sister and brother were killed. He went to Jordan, grew up and earned a Masters from University. Jammal is an active board member of the Families Forum on the Palestinian side.
Avraham Shomroni is from Israel. Born in Vienna, he came to England on the first Kindertransport in 1938, after his father was sent to Dachau concentration camp. He has lived in Israel since 1953. A former science high school teacher, his son fell in the air force in 1974. He joined the PCFF and is active in running senior high school dialogue workshops with his Palestinian partners.
The Lecture will be accompanied by an exhibition of images from PhotoVoice’s Side-by-Side project which is being run in partnership with PCFF. Read more about the project.
