History

Rose ClassPhotoVoice was built on a partnership between its founders Anna Blackman and Tiffany Fairey, which originated whilst they were at Edinburgh University.

In 1998, they established projects in Vietnam (Street Vision) and Nepal (Children’s Forum) which were to become the cornerstones of the present-day organisation.

Initially run on a voluntary basis, PhotoVoice became a registered charity in 2003. Now well established, PhotoVoice has a governing board, a core of professional staff and a wide network of trainers and facilitators, volunteers, and supporters.

“Since its launch PhotoVoice has established itself as a pioneer in the sector, winning widespread support with the public and media and sharing its unique project methodologies with groups all over the world.  With a tiny income it has accomplished great things, training socially excluded groups in photojournalism skills to give them a voice.  Its students have gone on to study at university, found work in the photographic industry and have been commissioned by the BBC”

Vision and Mission

Side by Side#

PhotoVoice’s vision is for a world in which no one is denied the opportunity to speak out and be heard.

PhotoVoice’s mission is to build skills within disadvantaged and marginalised communities using innovative participatory photography and digital storytelling methods so that they have the opportunity to represent themselves and create tools for advocacy and communications to achieve positive social change.

Working in partnerships with other charities, NGOs and community organisations PhotoVoice designs and delivers tailor-made participatory photography, digital storytelling and self-advocacy projects for socially excluded groups. Our pioneering approach brings together the arts, media, development and social change agendas to work with hard-to-reach groups on projects that give voice, build skills, provide platforms for advocacy and work towards sustainable change.

Why Photography?
Photography is a highly flexible tool that crosses cultural and linguistic barriers and can be adapted to all abilities. Its power lies in its dual role as an art form and a means to record facts. It provides an accessible way to define realities, communicate perspectives and raise awareness of important social and global issues. Its low cost and ease of dissemination encourage sharing and increase the potential to generate dialogue and discussion.

Note: the term ‘photovoice’ is also used generically by practitioners to refer to participatory photography methodology. Please see our ‘Methodology’ section for further details about the field of participatory photography.
